Mary Kay Hawkins - Windmill Ponds
May 11, 2016
Mary Kay Hawkins knows the difference that well-managed housing can make in people’s lives. Before joining Vista Prairie Communities as the Executive Director of Windmill Ponds in August 2014, May Kay managed a standalone senior living community for 11 years, provided consulting services for assisted living providers for five years, and owned and operated an adult foster care home.
Mary Kay also holds a Housing Manager’s Certificate from Leading Age of MN as well as an EMT Certification, and has experience in Section 8 and Section 42 rental property management.
Mary Kay’s favorite part of her job is the people she works with and the residents she serves. She describes her day-to-day life as Executive Director as “ever-changing, evolving, and very busy” yet notes that she is “never too busy to interact with the people we serve.”
She is always looking for ways to improve the lives of Windmill Ponds residents, and in the next few years her goals for Vista Prairie and Windmill Ponds are to strive for excellence by enhancing all departments and to assist with standardization of operations.
Outside of work, Mary Kay’s life is just as busy and ever-evolving. Her seven children keep her busy even as adults, with such events as an annual pilgrimage she makes to a hot springs retreat in Calistoga, California wit her five daughters. Mary Kay also keeps busy with dance, reading, and participation in the Area Chamber of Commerce.
While her home and work life keep her schedule full, Mary Kay approaches everything she does with equal measures of love and joy, and describes herself as a “genuinely happy person.” And her hard work has paid off—Mary Kay is the recipient of an award for Outstanding Community Partner for Service Learning from College of St. Benedict & St. John’s University as well as a Quality in Hospice Service Award from Heartland Hospice.
