When exploring senior living options, it can be challenging to understand the differences between care types. To simplify the process, we’ve outlined key distinctions between assisted living and nursing homes (also known as skilled nursing facilities, or SNFs). Consider this your comprehensive guide to Assisted Living and Nursing Home care.
What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living provides apartment-style accommodations for older adults who need support with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) while maintaining a sense of independence. Services typically include meal plans, housekeeping, laundry, medication management, personal care assistance, and access to social, wellness, and recreational opportunities.
This option is ideal for individuals who may be seeking relief from home maintenance, require assistance with daily tasks, and value opportunities for social engagement and companionship.
Assisted living communities may be separate facilities but are often found with independent living or memory care communities.
After touring a community, residents typically complete a personalized, one-on-one assessment with a nurse, who develops an individualized care plan. Residents also receive a monthly activity calendar designed to encourage learning, engagement, and connection with others.
At Vista Prairie Communities, residents enjoy restaurant-style dining with flexible menu options and daily entrée specials served during standard mealtimes. In addition, our Aspire – Life on Purpose™ lifestyle program is thoughtfully designed to enhance overall well-being by supporting each resident across five key dimensions: social, physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. Through a robust calendar of purposeful programming, residents are encouraged to stay active, build meaningful relationships, continue learning, and engage in experiences that bring joy and fulfillment. From fitness classes and educational opportunities to social gatherings, creative expression, and spiritual enrichment, Aspire empowers individuals to live with intention and maintain a strong sense of purpose each day.
What is a Nursing Home (Skilled Nursing Facility)?
Nursing homes offer a more clinical, suite-style setting similar to a hospital environment. They provide 24-hour medical care and rehabilitation services for individuals with chronic or complex health conditions, significant mobility limitations, or those recovering from surgery (National Institute on Aging). You can have a private or semi-private (shared) room.
Both assisted living and nursing homes are typically paid for by an individual or through long-term care insurance. The cost of nursing home care is typically significantly higher than assisted living due to the level of medical supervision and services provided. On average, nursing home care may exceed $10,000 per month, compared to approximately $7,500-$8,000 per month for assisted living.
Nursing homes may operate as standalone facilities or as part of a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), which can also include independent living, assisted living, and memory care services.
In summary, assisted living offers a more residential environment, designed to support individuals in maintaining their independence while receiving help with daily activities while nursing homes provide a more clinical setting focused on comprehensive medical care.
